Cuban artist coming to St. Augustine
The St. Augustine-Baracoa Friendship Association is taking its exhibit of Cuban art entitled "The Binding of Two Cultures" on tour with visits to Universities and galleries in and around St. Augustine.
One of the Baracoan artists, Roel Caboverde Llacer, will make a visit to St. Augustine and be part of a reception at The Benson Galleries for the First Friday Art Walk on Sept. 5th  at 6 p.m. Several of his paintings are on display there.
Caboverde will meet with local artists during his stay for cultural and professional exchanges. He will also give workshops on various topics related to the art styles that are unique to Baracoa, the oldest city in Cuba.
Caboverde has a particular neo-cubist style, using his family and friends in fishing scenes, sporting events and paintings of markets, his beloved Assumption cathedral often as a backdrop.
He has been invited to participate in a major art exhibit at the Meridian International Center in Washington, D.C. in October. He has exhibited throughout Cuba, France, California and Florida,  and his paintings can be found in private collections in Europe and the United States.
The Serenata Beach Club in Ponte Vedra Beach has also asked Caboverde to hold a special showing of his paintings on Friday, Sept. 19th.
Select paintings by Cuban artists Luis Eliades Rodriquez and Guillermo Orlando Piedra will also be on exhibit. There will be wine and cheese reception from 6 to 8 p.m.
"The Binding of Two Cultures Exhibit" goes up in the new Lazzara Performance Hall on the campus of the University of North Florida in Jacksonville for the opening performance of the Ballet Nacional de Cuba's "Don Quixote," one of classical ballet's most challenging masterpieces.
The Cuban version of Cervantes' satirical romance brings fire, passion, romance and humor together to create a precise fusion of modern and classical ballet technique.
There will be one performance only on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m., though the paintings will be on exhibit for the entire month of October. The "Arts Exploration" lecture begins at 6:30 p.m.
The Friendship Association will be organizing group tickets and a bus from St. Augustine for the ballet. .
